Chocolate-Gingerbread-House Petits Fours

I received this cookie idea from Martha Stewart's Cookie of the Day email this morning. They are adorable. If the Gingerbread Dream Homes were a bit too fancy for you to try, then take a look at these mini chocolate-gingerbread bite size houses. They would make cute place markers for Christmas Dinner or just on a cake plate as Petits Fours. CLICK HERE to see the recipe.

Luscious Homemade Food Gifts

Better Homes & Gardens has a wonderful slide show with photos and recipes for some delicious homemade gifts. CLICK HERE to take a look at their "Luscious Homemade Food Gifts". There are 26 recipes with photos and tips on how to package and give these gifts.I chose a few photos from the slide show to remind myself and anyone who reads this entry that making homemade treats for gifts can be very simple. In fact, I have learned to keep things simple. I think it is important to remember that a lot of people receive things like that around the holidays. So to just bundle a half dozen cookies in a nice way with ribbon and a pretty tag is best.

This first photo is Almond Breton Biscuits. I chose this one for the name mostly. Have you ever added almond extract to a good shortbread cookie recipe? Give it a try. Almond extract is my "secret ingredient" in my shortbread cookies. I always get compliments on the flavor.

For instance the nougat treats above. There are only four. A great sampling of your culinary skills, but not too much. Four small treats packaged in a tasteful box with a nice personal message attached is perfect.

Last, (above) look at these bars. What a nice way to package them. Just a enough for a sample, but not too much. Not too much for the recipient and not too much (stress) for you!

Remember, presentation makes all the difference.

Baking Cookies as Gifts?

Are you baking cookies as gifts this year? There are so many great cookie recipes to choose from. I know I will be baking soon and I still haven't totally decided which cookies I'll make yet.

Well, for sure, I'll make some Peanut Butter Cookies, some Russian Teacakes (aka Mexican Wedding Cookies, aka Snow Balls), but after that I just haven't made up my mind yet.

This picture is from last Christmas. This is what we gave my son's teachers. There are mixed opinions on giving cookies to teachers for gifts. On one hand, some teachers probably get a lot of homemade goodies at Christmas so why give him/her more? On the other hand, why not? If she/he gets a bunch they can share and serve them to others.

I like giving my baked goods in a nice jar that can be reused for something else later. I purchased these jars at Wal Mart. They carry them year round. They were very reasonable and I know the teachers were able to reuse them for storage at home or in their classroom.

I separated each layer of cookies with a piece of parchment paper and tied each with a nice ribbon. I made handmade cards that my son could write a personal message on.

I especially find it important to give gifts to teachers as my kids get older. My son is in 8th grade this year and he has 7 teachers. I know they would love a jar of cookies. Junior High and High School teachers tend to not receive as many gifts and/or thank-you's as Elementary teachers. That's why I really enjoy making something special for my son's Junior High teachers.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks has a super cookie recipe to share, go on over and take a look. And you can find tons of recipes for cookies at Martha Stewart, All Recipes, Better Homes & Gardens, and let's not forget the Cook's Illustrated Holiday Baking Guide (mentioned in one of my previous posts), as well as this handy Cookie Recipe list that has been circulating in email inboxes for a while now. Just copy and paste it as an html document to keep all the links active or it will be here in my archive. Happy Baking!
